home reflection
My father was a wandering Aramean…” Some years ago I attended a scripture workshop where the presenter asked, “How many of you are descended from slaves?” A few of us raised our hands. Then he spoke eloquently of our solidarity with our descendants in the faith, and spoke of Abraham, and the Israelites in Egypt, and the Passover and Exodus, and Jesus’ death and resurrection, and asked again, “How many of you are descended from slaves?” A few more raised our hands. He became more and more specific as the hour went on, asking the question again several times until finally most of us caught on — as Christians, we are all descendants of the slaves in Egypt, and as such, we are (or should be) in solidarity with those who endure slavery in any of its many forms today. My father was a wandering Aramean!
